Three Ways of Looking at a Sandwich

Distance sat at the table
Across from me.

I didn’t say word.
It didn’t hear me.
So I didn’t reply.

I stood on my chair
And ate my bread.

I shouted
And slurped my soup.

~~~~
A cold spring rain
Is drastically the
Idea of a sandwich.
We agree.
Just this once.
~~~~

A straight line
Can’t
Touch its toes.

But a berry can.

  1. That’s a good one. I love your jumps, your moves:

    A cold spring rain
    Is drastically the
    Idea of a sandwich.

    I don’t fully get your meaning, but I can make one. And it’s credible, keeps with the mealtime surface theme while using some startling imagery. Your poems are always active and mobile.

    1. Thanks Andy. I don’t always aim for overt meaning, but to be playful. But you need some sort of handle, or as you said, surface theme, to hold it together. Sometimes I achieve that, sometimes not. I appreciate that you took the time to read this poem and comment on it.
