The Wayward

Park bench, the library, a light lunch, and coffee,
Of each lay step amounting
Somehow to the heart’s brimming light,
The blue sky, suddenly thinking, “equipped with in each of us that part of us
That turns with the universe,” the afternoon is warm for late
Summer, the library was empty, I may have even
Said this out loud, “on the way home, I walked
To the river, and I stood
There till I couldn’t tell either from another,”
The trees are beginning to lose their leaves,
It’s 225 million years to make it around the galaxy,
I wrote, “Dusk like shadows in magic clothes,”
At some point during my supper,
In a letter and put it in a tree for the birds to look at,
I laid down and waited to feel the continental drift,
To hear the crickets at night in the garden through the kitchen
Window, and as quietly as the ant
Walks, the moon crosses the sky.

There’s so much faith in the line, in the act of “In a letter and put it in a tree for the birds to look at” to speak with nature, to life in that way reminds me of an old friend who kept a journal every day of his life, sometimes long musings and other times, simple list of things done that day like “went to Safeway and bought a Swanson’s TV dinner, went home and ate it, washed it down with Karkov vodka and listened to Supertramp’s Breakfast in America.” Writing letters for birds, keeping a journal shows so much appreciation for what we are given.

    1. Thanks! I’m glad you liked that line. I’ve been buried in paperwork at work lately, I thought I’d do myself a favor and do something more interesting and alive with paperwork and give it to the birds. I used to keep journals when I was in my 20’s. I should start again. Your friend sounds interesting.
