Journal Entry

How does one return. Ankles full of the sky. Throat
Clear of clarity.

To ply whatever theories one hopes to shape
And hang them up like coats and call this
Being or consciousness. The pinprick of dreams.

How does one get back to an open heart and
Feet on the ground full of thoughts and inklings.
The metaphysics of a canyon and anything that
Isn’t a canyon. Even the fire hydrant is a vase
Of ideas.

And furthermore, September is the last
Green house, soon enough, the dried-up roller skates
Of what’s left of the flowers.

  1. I love the notion of return and every moment seems to present an opportunity to do so, to get back to simple pleasures, just kind of happy to have another day, to be alive, “the metaphysics of a canyon and anything that isn’t a canyon.” That just about covers it all. Great job on this one Bob.

      1. I forget exactly how many times we’ve been in the playoffs recently, something like 5 out of the last 6 seasons, two times to the NL championship, but nothing more. This team this year seems to be having a lot of fun so they just might….at least win a few rounds anyway.

  2. Bob, this one really resonates. That, amid change, how can we find purchase on the ground and corral our thoughts. The world spins like roller skate wheels. In that blurring, it’s good to take a breath and feel and think. This is another well-crafted poem, man.

    1. Thanks, Dave. Amidst all the clamor and change, I think we can still find that ground. I really like how you put it, “find purchase on the ground and corral our thoughts.” That’s really great. Thanks, again!

    1. I kind of just let this one happen without thinking too much of where it was going. Though, I guess, that’s kind of what happens anyway. But I do like that idea of something to write around without being too specific. I think journals work for that, some kind of form, without too many borders. If that makes sense?
