How often does
Beauty start as an error
That finds its way
Again
In ambition
Of all that wonder.
Beauty is the set list
Of all lost
And gained
In a life, in a day,
After all these years.
Beauty annealed
By the wingspan and the walking shoes
And all that curiosity and cosmos
Templed
In the open fields.
yes ! love this ode to beauty: the strange and sometimes strangled ways it gets there —

Thanks John! It’s not often easy, but we try to get there.

Interesting and true–we don’t know beauty (etc.) until it is lost.

Thanks, Diana! I agree, that is often the case.

that’s such a wonderful idea – beauty starting as an error. i’m reminded of musicians who hear a mistake made in the composition, but follow that mistake and it leads to an entirely new composition. This one flows so nicely and ends with endless possibilities in those open fields.

Thanks, Steve. I agree. How often, like you said about the musicians, there is a mistake that turns out to be a good idea. Often getting from A to B isn’t a straight line. And that sometimes is for the best.

looks like the next couple of days are gonna hammer home the zigzag way is the way with all this ice and snow. i love it. the whole world slowed down. schools closed. busses late. everyone pissed off but in the middle of all the misery, there it is…kids playing in the snow, people skiing and the bars are still open or a bar.

Yes! We’re in the same boat. My work wanted to be open, but realized nothing is plowed, so we’re closed too. We got 18 inches of snow. And it’s beautiful.

crazy weather and i don’t mean in a global warming or the end is near sort of way, but just in earth history weather and all the snow in north america in these 24 hours. wild.

We got 18 inches. Which is a lot, but not for us generally. But we are one of the snowiest cities in North America. Still a lot of fun.

I just looked up the single day record for snow fall in Buffalo: The highest one-day snowfall total in Buffalo, NY, is 33.9 inches, recorded on December 10, 1995.
The year record is: 188.3 inches – The greatest cumulative snow fall for Buffalo, New York. This occurred during the year that ended December 31st, 2022

I thought it woulda been from a long time ago or maybe we only recently started recording snow falls?

Not sure when they started keeping track. But in 2022 we had a major blizzard. It’s even worth while looking at some videos of that storm.

Yes. It was crazy. I spent Christmas morning snow shoeing around the city.

those sink holes are another freak out. i think that’s what they’re called? like when the road just opens up. man thinking about all the ways we could die, anxiety levels spike and makes a beer feel very mentally necessary.

I agree, sink holes are kind of terrifying. The ground suddenly giving way under your feet.

at some point i guess we just surrender and let go, but the whole insecurity of being alive, knowing all along that suddenly it could be gone and that it might be painful….i don’t know how we all do it, but we do and then being born in north america as opposed to a war place area.

I agree, we are fortunate to live where we do. And it kind of gets me down, but also makes me appreciate the time I have.

Gorgeous piece, Bob. It makes me recall times when things have been searched for and yearned for which end up disappointments…and those happy ‘accidents’ which are so wonderful.

Thanks, Chris. I agree. Sometimes those mistakes when you’re writing turn out later on to be really interesting. not always. But like you said, those happy accidents are cool when they happen.
