I make a nest.
I buy a hang glider.
I bring home a pulsar.
I borrow a sweater.
Lean against the strain
An ingenious ladder of stars
For an alphabet.
Its own stillness terrifies
The moon.
It’s true, imaginatively tested,
Autumn’s red leaves
Are capable of falling in and out of black holes.
Interesting in a good way. Love the line about stillness/moon.

i’m listening to the Stranglers song PARADISE or i was, now john cooper clarkes’s i wanna be yours is playing on the you tube jukebox and i like the nest giving way to a hang glider because i wish that blessing on every traveler. there must be no better pasta beer meal after riding 100 miles in august humidity. i prefer winter over summer. i feel stupid for saying so. but i do. i look forward to winter and i do no winter sports. i just like when so few things are alive and those that hang around! those birds in trees whistling a chorus in sub zero temperatures. i love that. but i do love cardinals in spring and summer. i think they stay loyal to their trees.

I do prefer summer. Though those birds hiding in the bushes are pretty awesome. Just listened to the tow songs you suggested, really good. Thanks for the suggestions. I’m admitting not familiar with John Cooper. I think this poem is mostly me just having some fun. But trying hang gliding would be really cool…well, if I didn’t die attempting it. Cardinals do stay all winter. I have a bird feeder I keep, and a cardinal couple come every day.

don’t get me wrong…i’m like you. i love summer and spring and winter and fall. i lived in california for a few years and it didn’t make meteorological sense in terms of there being no extremes. yes, somehow john cooper clarke slipped under many people’s radar. cardinals seem to be the opener of the spring band, the one that wasn’t hiding away all winter and is ready to get them buds bursting into leaves! now!!

I love all the imagery in this poem, especially the “ingenious ladder of stars.” Well done!
