Short Poems

Dusk

The world is dusk and soiled collar, it is in the turn of a leaf.

The world is anxious, and who knows if the stars believe in ghosts?

I walk along the railroad tracks, the scrub, the flowers, across the scribbled trestles over city roads.

Astronauts and apple blossoms share the same haircut. Yellow birds sing.

The Graffiti at the Rail Yard

Arcade orange and gusto blue,
Even if the letters are indecipherable

Like a haiku in a smoke-filled room,
A cereal box of summer sky.

DIY

A simple record. Just guitar.
While standing in a pile of leaves.

Existential Crisis at Six Years Old

Like a box
All alone

Of crayons.

Reflection

The moon, white and moonlike, unearths a quiet evening.

A New Shadow on the Chess Board

The stars parody distance,
Says the universe.

Ice cream,
Says the philosopher.

The cat on the windowsill is aware of it too,
Says the author.

Note #2

How the poet, on a walk, leans into the rain, like a unicyclist in zero gravity.

  1. Both “Existential Crisis at Six Years Old” and “A New Shadow on the Chess Board” made me smile. The latter is, perhaps, my favorite here; although, it’s difficult to choose. All are brilliant! And I love the line “Astronauts and apple blossoms have the same haircut.”

  2. There’s so much to love here Bob and in terms of mental therapy for me, I’m drawn to “the world is anxious,” a reminder that I’m not alone and “it is in the turn of a leaf,” that there is newness around every corner and ” Even if the letters are indecipherable,” which I take as both sad and lonely over not knowing and at the same time exhilarating because it is like an unknown X factor and filled with possibilities.

    1. Thanks, Steve. I’m glad this resonated with you. These first autumn days are kinda tough, having to say goodbye to summer. I see the Brewers clinched the division. You must be happy about that. I really like you interpretation of the graffiti letters. Thanks!!

      1. I agree Bob. Autumn is beautiful and all, but it’s also a reminder of what’s up ahead and for you and I, being stuck in Buffalo and Montreal, we know what that means.

Yes, I am happy about the Brewers returning to the playoffs and in that they are one of the few remaining franchises to never have won a world series, I’m hoping they got really hot when October arrives.
