It’s the chatter at the edge of the day,
Tracing its thoughts
Till it forgets its sense in an afternoon field
Lying there, scrimmaging dreams,
And the coneflower on its stalk
Mirrors the void, and the grasshopper
Like a highway with a half-moon
As antenna.
I love it how things that happen to us during the day are like scraps for dreams. It’s like an old movie house with no charge for admission. I miss grasshoppers or maybe I shouldn’t? But if I remember right, they don’t bother us too much. We get too close and they go away. I enjoy them as you said, “like a highway with a half-moon As antenna.” I never know where they’re jumping or hopping to.

was this written on a hot august night? fecund with creativity, scrimmaging dreams which all surrealists do, and the grasping of images: the coneflower on its stalk, and that half moon over the highway like an antenna which I saw one night coming home from Fellowship but was at a loss what to do with it: you found a way !

Sure was. We’ve had some hot days recently. I’m glad you liked the antenna part! And we were on the same page thinking that was cool. Thanks, John.

Loving the late August poems. If you feel so inclined, you should check out this journal and consider submitting. I’d say the above poem would be a perfect fit for it.

Another marvelous poem, particularly for me with the first stanza… how chatter can let loose and let mystery sink in.

Thanks, Dave. That mystery is important. And when you can let it sink in, I try to let that happen.
