Abstract Logic

Bob, , , 
Even in the shadows of 
City buildings 
Sits infinity. 
 
It just adds up that way. 
The universe is mostly
Unwalkable. 

The apples are 
Vagabond green,
This year 

Freight train 
Stems.

If we could give
The moon an ocean, 
Or glue on it blue wings.

Autumn first appears
In the tuning
Of a stranger’s guitar. 
 
In a galaxy of goldenrod
And a handful of comets.

  1. It’s just “out of sight, dynamite” like JJ used to say on Good Times. Did I mention that show already? It just kind of blows my mind what you come up with for your poems. And as always, it hits in the gut for the seasons, “Autumn first appears In the tuning Of a stranger’s guitar.” All the lines in this are magical and by the way, I’m listening to a song you mentioned while reading your poem – The Replacement’s “Swinging Party,” absolute genius song that has me sending emails to a girl who I was once with…..unfortunately, she never responds, so I take another sip of whisky and hope she’ll respond to the next one.

    1. Dynamite! Haha. Thanks. I do think you’ve said it before, but I love remembering that show. I listen to Swinging Party a lot. It’s so uplifting. I’m glad you like this strange poem! And that stranger’s guitar. The Brewers game start in a few minutes. Fingers crossed.

      3. Thanks for the empathy Bob. I need it. So disappointing. It’s a wonder how similar it feels to losing a lover, an entire season over, all those games and ups and downs and then BAM, it’s over and there’s no way to get it back or just in nostalgia which tends to depress me.

      Hello! I have had the pleasure of visiting and perusing some of most recent posts, and have taken the opportunity to savour your poems. I very much enjoy your lively conversation here with Steve. I must confess that I concur with much of what Steve mentioned. Needless to say, many aspects of your poem here (and others elsewhere) appeal to me very much, at least to the extent that I have been an occasional maker and connoisseur of poetry, especially when time and mood permit.

      Indeed, your excellent poem entitled “Abstract Logic” here is particularly abstract in its logic as well as being evocative.       7. Sound Eagle. I’m overjoyed that you enjoy the back and forth Bob and I enjoy, one of the beautiful things about wordpress, sort of an impromptu writer’s group. I don’t know a lot about music, but the song, the piano you posted here has an eerie and yet pleasant meandering to it. I’m reminded of some of Sun Ra’s compositions, so many unexpected sounds and interesting transitions. Great work. Looking forward to more.

      1. Mmmm, interesting! I prefer this planet, I must say. Though I like to look at the others from a distance. You’ve got me thinking though that the universe is more space than rock so we’d have to travel its breadth another way. I won’t write down any more though as I’ll be going through rabbit holes with my thoughts!

  4. I love the first two stanzas and how they have me tumbling through the vastness of space and time (while grounded in the shadows of a city). Autumn appearing in the tuning of a strangers guitar is simply beautiful and I can’t help but feel the warm mysterious spaciousness of it.

    1. Thanks, Chris. Looks like I’m pretty fascinated with space, big and small, and how that connect to each other. Maybe autumn is like that a little, it seems to bloom (with color) while diminishing at the same time. And as you know in Canada, winter just opens all kinds of open spaces. Especially the quiet of a winter wood.

  6. A fantastical mix of images here, and I particularly connected with the stanzas of the apples and autumn. I’m in that mood. I’m intrigued by the vagabond green. Makes me wonder if the apples dream of traveling to exotic lands. And that language of the stranger’s guitar is lovely music.

    1. I was dreading the end of summer, but now I think I’m on the autumn train. Autumn and winter always have me think of wide open spaces, and wandering around in them. That’s why I think of those vagabond apples.

    The Universe is mostly unwalkable is a statement that is simultaneously daunting and terrifying (just in the knowledge of something as massive as the universe.That you mean nothing, really, in the vastness of space and time) but also deeply comforting. In a culture where you are constantly told you have to do everything– it’s comforting to know that you can’t.
