We will puzzle you.
By whatever pieces necessary.

Beauty is a ridiculous number.
It could take years of theorizing

And chalkboards to put a finger
On this.

I think I need an alphabet hat
To count the stars, and forgetfulness

To remember them all. A code name,
Because it would be cool. Just saying.

The universe is acuity, all the way down to and including unawareness.
A rolling pin made of daydreams. Unmade of mountain streams.

Most of it you can’t see. Most of it too small or too far away.
The universe is a merry-go-round in a metaphysical sense.
The universe is homespun, like plaster walls or quantum mechanics.

    1. Thanks. I had to look up that song. You’re knowledge of music is impressive. I wasn’t aware of The Glove. But am glad I do now. Also, the latest single from the Cure is much better then the first they put out.

  2. “By whatever pieces necessary,” like Malcom X on mushrooms. The idea of numbers and beauty always fascinated me, especially that ancient practice of Gematria, where two different words share the same numerical value. I think Greeks and Jews and some other languages use the system. Years of theories, as you say. This poem picks up speed as it rolls along in who the hell knows what our life and this life is all about and then you sprinkle in some “merry-go-round” and I’m freaking flying with your word combos!

    1. Thanks Steve. Yes, definitely like Malcolm on mushrooms. I love that. I had to look up Gematria. Looks fascinating. I could see using that to come up with some wild word combos. Which I love, and I’m glad you do to. Also, my wife just showed my a video of a guy who caught three fowl balls in one game. And I guess it was all in the same inning. That’s statistically crazy!

      1. Totally awesome the three foul balls in one game! I wonder what his secret is? And the word combos, yeh it’s cool like how the word doubt can be the number 240 and so can the word for a group of people who are like vampires who suck the life out of people and all they are left with is doubt.

      2. I think the secret is he is an A’s fan and the stands were mostly empty. But still really cool. I’ve heard of people assigning numbers of words in the bible and trying to decipher its hidden meaning. But I think it could really help come up with interesting word combos.

        yeh, that’s it exactly…deciphering hidden meanings in the bible. I first learned about it from the black and white movie Pie directed by Darren Aronofsky, not to be confused by the other movie called Pi.

        You have an amazing way of bringing words together Bob, totally unexpected, surprising combos.

      7. I don’t know how I downloaded it. I think it’s because I used to have ubuntu operating system and it was easy to download from pirate bay I think it was called, probably illegal, but now I have it on my PS3 player. Such an intriguing movie. Compelling is the word I think.

        I guess nowadays the equivalent of making mixed tapes for people is downloading movies and music onto a USB stick.

      14. My dad had the ball signed, but it’s hard to read the signatures. The game was Tigers vs Yankees, 4-24-82 (my dad dated the ball) 3 HRs were hit that game, all Tigers: Jerry Turner, Kirk Gibson, and Larry Herdon. I’m assuming it’s not Gibson. I think I would have remembered that.

      15. Wonderful that your dad had it signed, gem of an item. I love how things arouse memories. I remember Herndon and Gibson of course, but not Turner. There are so many ways to catch a ball, but I think catching a homerun is the ultimate, just a bummer that it wasn’t a Yankee who hit it. Congratulations on the Yankees winning! Fun team. Impossible to not like Judge and many other Yankees. All seem like fun guys. I’m looking forward to them in the Series. I hope it’s the Mets they play.

      17. Totally old school, back to the amazing Reggie years. I’m totally rooting for the Yanks. I don’t know why, but I never disliked the Yankees which is weird because my dad is from Boston and the Brewers competing heavily when they were both in the AL East. Judge and Soto and Stanton on the same team is historically special.

      18. I heard today that the Dodgers got their name from having so many trolleys and trains, that the people who lived in Brooklyn had to be very apt at dodging them. If that’s true, that’s an awesome name origin.

  7. I will second John Malone’s comment that this is wonderful and weird. This poem feels longer than your usual ones, and stuffed with even more creative pairings and interestingness. It’s like I bit into a chocolate chip cookie and there are more chocolate chips than usual and they’re dark chocolate, so I chew slower to enjoy them. And I had to eat more cookies — and read your poem a few times — because they’re / it’s so good.

    1. Thank you Dave for the wonderful comment. I’ll be having a chocolate chip cookie for sure tonight. I did write this over a few days. And it did have the feel of possibly being two poems. But I thought to keep it as one poem. I’m glad you liked it!!

  9. There is some wild and wonderful imagery here, Bob. I love: “A rolling pin made of daydreams. Unmade of mountain streams.” Brilliant! As others have said, this poem has a lot of depth and definitely requires a second and third read.

  10. There’s a lot in here to think about and enjoy. I love the need for a code name because it would be cool. I see the poet emerge there for a moment, a quick hello and then back to work conjuring lines. A pause. If that makes any sense. I also really like “The universe is acuity… including unawareness”. Agreed! Homespun too!
