Sunday Afternoon

Fairy tales are true. The birds transform into us, and we transform into birds.

But that’s not completely true. Neither is any of this. True enough mostly works. And the remainder? There’s always a remainder. How true. Even black holes leak radiation.

Complexity long ago outgrew the two-dimensional world. How many dimensions are there really? The solar system is a crop circle of gravity. Unbeknownst to you, your dreams keep a calendar. Wouldn’t you like to know the dates?

What does the cosmos wear? Some sort of driftwood hat? The storms of Jupiter for a buttonhole? All the highways for a fingerprint?

I like to follow along, tag along the railroad on rainy afternoon with waterproof boots and a simple blue jacket. Could this be biography?

It’s also meaningful to just sit and do nothing. And probably wise. I’m writing this in a bathrobe and a few days removed from a shave and wondering if this tooth ache will go away on its own. A garden is lots of work. But I’m glad of it. Meandering is a branch of philosophy. Take is seriously. Eating together is civilization.

Later on, as night sets in, I look out the window. The cold rain is indifferent. Maybe I need a little of this indifference.

  1. what a wonder a toothache can inspire. hope that’s on the heal. nerves connected to teeth make a good argument for the legalization of morphine, but if that were the case, you would have been passed out and not written this.. “could this be biography?” classic.

      1. they sell it as eye drop liquid too, probably at a nutrition store, but yes, it works temporarily, but cannabis works better in the way it helps us focus on what we’e doing and suddenly, we aren’t thinking about the pain anymore but that’s a rare moment which makes morphine the better solution.

      2. yes my friend….those tooth aches are crazy painful. here in quebec and canada, health care is free, but not dentists. i never understood that because i’d rather have a sprained ankle than a cavity or maybe not if i worked as a mail room delivery guy and had to walk all over the place, but even then, the teeth which i guess evolved as we became meat eaters or maybe we always were meat eaters? i don’t know but i could see becoming a vegetarian. i take care of this cockapoo often and hanging out with her has made me question my eating habits. she is so freaking smart.

      3. You gotta take care of those teeth. And a balanced diet is super important. I just assumed dentist visits are free in Canada. That’s interesting it’s not. What’s not health care about dentistry?

  2. You feel very free in a prose poem, don’t you? Free to thrash about spontaneously, to swerve from diaristic details to cosmological speculation & back, to leave the reader pleasantly disoriented. You have a good feel for this formless form.
