Birds make up my hands
My hands are invisible
But not the birds
They have kept their feathers
They have kept their language
But stopped using words
Words are all I have
Now that the birds are gone
Visible only as the outlines of wings
The air-thin bones of sky
“mangoes. i’m gonna get me some mangoes.” do you recognize that line? It’s the tiger scene apocalypse now…..i started thinking about that scene right after i read this poem…..it just kept getting closer and closer and closer. this one cuts to the bone, reminding us, so humbly, that we are maybe less than birds because birds seem so damn happy?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifoN_vDtgiQ

I really have to watch Apocalypse Now again, and soon. It’s been too long. What a wild movie. Those birds do have a way with them!

i like how birds chirp before and after disasters and i like how THE END is played at the beginning of Apocalypse Now probably like it felt for soldiers sent there THE END as their beginning into what is maybe the worst hell of all…..war.

strange and haunting , referencing that quote from that Bee Gees song — though in another context —

I agree with the comment below–haunting. Your poem made me wonder how many “conversations” birds and other creatures have that we will never understand.
