Even in the shadows of
City buildings
Sits infinity.
It just adds up that way.
The universe is mostly
Unwalkable.
The apples are
Vagabond green,
This year
Freight train
Stems.
If we could give
The moon an ocean,
Or glue on it blue wings.
Autumn first appears
In the tuning
Of a stranger’s guitar.
In a galaxy of goldenrod
And a handful of comets.
It’s just “out of sight, dynamite” like JJ used to say on Good Times. Did I mention that show already? It just kind of blows my mind what you come up with for your poems. And as always, it hits in the gut for the seasons, “Autumn first appears In the tuning Of a stranger’s guitar.” All the lines in this are magical and by the way, I’m listening to a song you mentioned while reading your poem – The Replacement’s “Swinging Party,” absolute genius song that has me sending emails to a girl who I was once with…..unfortunately, she never responds, so I take another sip of whisky and hope she’ll respond to the next one.

Dynamite! Haha. Thanks. I do think you’ve said it before, but I love remembering that show. I listen to Swinging Party a lot. It’s so uplifting. I’m glad you like this strange poem! And that stranger’s guitar. The Brewers game start in a few minutes. Fingers crossed.

I’m so sorry. I followed the game. That’s heartbreaking.

Thanks for the empathy Bob. I need it. So disappointing. It’s a wonder how similar it feels to losing a lover, an entire season over, all those games and ups and downs and then BAM, it’s over and there’s no way to get it back or just in nostalgia which tends to depress me.

it’s amazing and at the same time depressing how our love for a sports team partially shapes our world view. I’m always expecting the worse these days, these years.

I agree. When you’re up, there’s nothing better. But when you’re down…ugh. But when you’ve lost this long. It’s not fun.

Dear Bob,
Hello! I have had the pleasure of visiting and perusing some of most recent posts, and have taken the opportunity to savour your poems. I very much enjoy your lively conversation here with Steve. I must confess that I concur with much of what Steve mentioned. Needless to say, many aspects of your poem here (and others elsewhere) appeal to me very much, at least to the extent that I have been an occasional maker and connoisseur of poetry, especially when time and mood permit.
Indeed, your excellent poem entitled “Abstract Logic” here is particularly abstract in its logic as well as being evocative. Therefore, I would like to reciprocate and resonate with your poem with one of my musical compositions called “Logic in Transit“, which is scored for Saxophone or Bass Clarinet and Piano, and has been performed first by Dr Floyd Williams and Prof. Stephen Emmerson, and later by Dr Floyd Williams and Mitchell Leigh:
May you and Steve enjoy the music! Once again, thank you for sharing your poetry. Happy mid-October to you and Steve!
Yours sincerely,

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. I’m glad you like this poem and other poems. And the back and forth with Steve. I listened to Logic in Transit, and it is fantastic. I love the abstract soundscape. I look forward to hearing more of your music. Thanks again!!

Dear Bob,
Hi there! My previous comments may not have got through. Here’s my third attempt:
You are very welcome! I am delighted by your reply and your compliment on my music. Since “Logic in Transit” appeals to you and since you would like to listen to more of my music, I would like to inform you that one of my musical albums entitled “New Sensations“, I hope that you might also consider that I am as worthy of your praise or admiration regarding my music as much as my writings. If you also happened to be an audiophile and connoisseur of fine sonic art, then you would be pleased by the availability of a fair amount of music on my blog, much of which comprises my musical compositions. These constitute only a fraction of my total musical output, as I have yet to find time to showcase the rest on my blog. Moreover, those published compositions are by no means representative of my musical oeuvres, which are very diverse. Hence, you may want to turn on your finest speakers or headphones, as some of my posts and pages will be playing music to you automatically.
A good post to visit for a good sample of my music is entitled “🦅 SoundEagle in SoundCloud: Art, Music and Compositions about New Sensations, Love, Life, Country, Nature, Dreaming, Meditation and Spirituality 🏞🎼🎶“. The post features soundtracks from my aforementioned album entitled “New Sensations“, and is available for your enjoyment at

I am still savouring the abstract imageries conjured up by the first two stanzas of your poem entitled “Abstract Logic“:

Thank you for sharing that song. I loved it. I’m a big fan of ambient jazz/soundscapes, so I’m really enjoying what I’m here from your music. I’d love to see a graphic illustration. Thanks.

Sound Eagle. I’m overjoyed that you enjoy the back and forth Bob and I enjoy, one of the beautiful things about wordpress, sort of an impromptu writer’s group. I don’t know a lot about music, but the song, the piano you posted here has an eerie and yet pleasant meandering to it. I’m reminded of some of Sun Ra’s compositions, so many unexpected sounds and interesting transitions. Great work. Looking forward to more.

Dear Steve,
Hello! It is very nice indeed to be acquainted with you in our WordPress community here. Thank you for your reply and compliment. For you to claim that you “don’t know a lot about music”, I am pleasantly surprised by not only your mentioning the iconic experimental Jazz musician and poet Sun Ra, but also your positive response to my said composition “Logic in Transit“. Your comment thus indicates strongly to me that you are a connoisseur of fine music in general and advanced Jazz in particular. Therefore, I look forward to be informed of your thoughts about my musical composition called “Trance“, which is in my musical albums entitled “New Sensations“. As I mentioned earlier to Bob, I hope that you too might also consider that I am as worthy of your praise or admiration regarding my music as much as my writings. Whether or not you consider yourself to be an audiophile and connoisseur of fine sonic art, you would be pleased by the availability of a fair amount of music on my blog, much of which comprises my musical compositions. These constitute only a fraction of my total musical output, as I have yet to find time to showcase the rest on my blog, for I have been spreading myself quite thin with many errands and interests over the years. Moreover, those published compositions are by no means representative of my musical oeuvres, which are very diverse. Hence, you may want to turn on your finest speakers or headphones, as some of my posts and pages will be playing music to you automatically.

May you enjoy the music there to your heart’s content! Once again, thank you very much for your reply and encouragement.
Together with you and Bob, I love our three-way conversation very much, not to mention that we are now dealing interactively across three media: prose, poetry and music!
Yours sincerely,

Also love the vagabond apples and unwalkable universe.

Thank you, Sunra. I just saw you latest post, and I’m wishing the universe is more walkable. Crunchy leaves on other planets.

Mmmm, interesting! I prefer this planet, I must say. Though I like to look at the others from a distance. You’ve got me thinking though that the universe is more space than rock so we’d have to travel its breadth another way. I won’t write down any more though as I’ll be going through rabbit holes with my thoughts!

I love the first two stanzas and how they have me tumbling through the vastness of space and time (while grounded in the shadows of a city). Autumn appearing in the tuning of a strangers guitar is simply beautiful and I can’t help but feel the warm mysterious spaciousness of it.

Thanks, Chris. Looks like I’m pretty fascinated with space, big and small, and how that connect to each other. Maybe autumn is like that a little, it seems to bloom (with color) while diminishing at the same time. And as you know in Canada, winter just opens all kinds of open spaces. Especially the quiet of a winter wood.

A fantastical mix of images here, and I particularly connected with the stanzas of the apples and autumn. I’m in that mood. I’m intrigued by the vagabond green. Makes me wonder if the apples dream of traveling to exotic lands. And that language of the stranger’s guitar is lovely music.

I was dreading the end of summer, but now I think I’m on the autumn train. Autumn and winter always have me think of wide open spaces, and wandering around in them. That’s why I think of those vagabond apples.

The Universe is mostly unwalkable is a statement that is simultaneously daunting and terrifying (just in the knowledge of something as massive as the universe. That you mean nothing, really, in the vastness of space and time) but also deeply comforting. In a culture where you are constantly told you have to do everything– it’s comforting to know that you can’t.

Thanks! I love your point about vastness being comforting. I agree, we do feel that pressure to do everything. It’s not so bad being small compared to the universe.

When my guitar drifts out of tune, I know it’s autumn. The pitch of the notes gets lower, so I go out & collect pine pitch.

I often have a pining for pine pitch in autumn. Accompanied by an out of tuned guitar.
